Recent Trail Care Successes

Eagle Scout installs trail markers - May 2007.
 Ryan Gleason (son of Gary Gleason) of Eagle Scout Troop 895 Sweetwater District, installed trail markers throughout the Bonita Sunnyside trail network - making it far easier for people to find their way. Thank you Ryan !!!

Hitching post installed at Gazebo Completed March 23rd, 2006

Habitat preserved - by clearly defining trails in US Fish & Wildlife Preserve. Completed February 23rd, 2006

Steele Canyon Bridge cleaned up - This is the highway 94 trail crossing. Completed January 19th.

Improved drainage should keep trail open in wet season. - New culvert installed in wet part of park. Completed in early January.

Trail Trial Weekend - Riding skills were tested, money was raised, and fun was had

Organized trail rides - Dozens of riders have been introduced to new local trails in several early 2002 rides. Even many "old-timers" have found trails they never knew existed - right here in our own back yards!

Guided Local Trails Ride - Many people have never ridden the (hard-to-find) trails through the neighborhoods north of Sweetwater Road. 

BETH Center Benefit - camping, poker ride, breakfast ride, silent auction, and more! June 8, 9, and 10 at Summit Campground. 

Fiesta Island Ride - June 2nd. Everyone had a GREAT time! What a perfect place to ride... We need to do this one again soon!

Recent Project Successes

At the December 5th Sweetwater Community Planning Group, it was voted to authorize the Trails Sub-Committee to develop an update to the official community plan trails map, and to initiate activities to obtain official Board of Supervisors acceptance of all rejected trails easements.

At the July 17th County Supervisors Board Meeting, Muriel Watson spoke on our behalf, and was pleased to come back with news that the Board unanimously approved plans to proceed with a County-wide Trails Strategic Plan. Muriel's catch-phrase about the importance of "loops and links" has been often quoted and repeated since her impactful presentation.

Janeen Reed has been working closely with the staff of the City of Chula Vista to get trails cleared in Bonita Long Canyon, a new bridge over a culvert, a horse gate lowered, and much more. Janeen reports that the staff at the City of Chula Vista has been absolutely wonderful to work with!

Andrea Goyette worked with the County and Sweetwater Authority and local property owners to remove pipes and rebar sticking up in Winetka bridle path between Sweetwater Road and Cafe Avenida, and to relocate a dangerous water pipe obstacle off trail. Great work Andrea!!!

At the August 7th Sweetwater Community Planning Group Meeting, local developer Jeff Phair agreed to grant a trail easement through his new development near the kennel on San Miguel Road that will connect San Miguel Road to the Highlands trails.
